In Syria, priority is given to the agriculture
sector ; this led to the implementation of projects
of irrigation on the Oronte and Euphrate rivers and
the grant of significant payments to farmers. This
decision caused an increase of the agricultural
production and the achievement of the food
self-sufficiency for many strategic crops like
wheat, olive, cotton and fruits.
In 1998, the surface of arable lands covered 5.1
million hectares which represent 32% of the
territory. The irrigated lands cover 1.7 million
hectares which represent 30% of arable lands. The
production of cotton increased by a 55% (1.1
million tons against 0.7 millions previously). But
the productions of wheat and barley dropped because
of weak seasonal precipitation in 1997.
